Oskuvi Importer in Small Steps

Imports a WordPress export file in steps of a few seconds, so a large import doesn't time out. Stop, continue, and run it twice without doubles.

WordPress export files (WXR) only

(01) What it does

Moving a site with Tools → Export works until the site is large. Then the import runs into the server's time limit, stops half way, and a second try doubles what the first one brought in.

Oskuvi imports the same export file (the .xml file from Tools → Export, also called WXR) in steps of a few seconds each. Every step is a small request of its own, the file is read piece by piece, and every imported item carries a note of where it came from, so a second run skips what is already there.

Before anything is imported, you see what the file holds and decide about authors and media. Afterwards, a report lists what was imported, what was already there, and what was left out and why.

(02)Who it's for

Made for people like these.

  • Anyone moving a large WordPress site to new hosting with the built-in export.
  • Sites on ordinary shared hosting, where long imports time out.
  • Developers who need an import they can stop, continue and repeat safely.

(03)Key features

What's in it, feature by feature.

  • 01

    Doesn't get stuck

Each step reads a few records and stores where it stopped. Stop and continue later; a record that brings the server down is passed over and named in the report.

  • 02

    Running it twice doubles nothing

Every imported post, page and comment notes which item of which site it came from, so a second run of the same file skips it.

  • 03

    See the file first

How many posts, pages, media files, comments and terms it holds, and who its authors become here. New users get the site's default role, a password nobody knows, and no email.

  • 04

Media, one file at a time

Each file is downloaded in its own step, checked by WordPress's own file-type test, added with its title, caption and alt text, and attached. Image addresses inside posts are updated.

  • 05

    A report, item by item

What was imported, what was already here, and what was left out and why. “Try the failed media files again” retries only those.

  • 06

For files too large to upload

Put the file in wp-content/uploads/oskuvi_step by FTP and pick it on the screen. The report offers to delete it when the import is done.

(04)FAQ

Questions, answered.

Do I have to keep the page open?

While the page is open, the import moves. If you close it, the import waits; open Tools → Oskuvi Import again and press Continue.

The old site is already offline. Can I still import?

Yes, everything but the media files, which have to be downloaded from the old site. Untick “Download the media files”. If the old site comes back, the report has a button to download them then.

Can it import CSV files?

No. It imports WordPress export files only, not CSV files and not files from other systems.

Can I undo an import?

There is no undo button. Import into a fresh site or take a backup first, as with any import. Oskuvi only adds; it never changes or deletes content that is already there.
