Most store owners ask how to bring in more visitors. The more profitable question is what happens to the visitors who already came. If a hundred people enter your store and one buys, a small improvement in that ratio is worth more than another campaign.

That is CRO, conversion rate optimization: the same traffic, the same ad budget, and more orders.

## On the product page

**1. A first image that shows the product in use.** A white-background shot explains what it is. A photo in use explains why to want it.

**2. A final price with no surprises.** If there is a shipping fee, state it next to the price. A surprise at checkout is one of the most common reasons shoppers leave.

**3. An add-to-cart button that stays in view on mobile.** Most shoppers browse on a phone. If they have to scroll to find the button, some won't.

**4. Answers before the questions are asked.** Delivery time, returns, sizing. Whatever a customer would have to email about is what the page is missing.

## In the cart

**5. A free-shipping threshold shoppers can see approaching.** "Add $20 more for free shipping" raises the average order.

**6. One complementary offer, not ten.** A single product that fits what is already in the cart works better than a long list.

## At checkout

**7. As few fields as possible.** Every extra field is a reason to stop. Name, contact, address, payment.

**8. The payment methods your customers already use.** In Canada that means Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Interac alongside cards.

**9. A message to people who left.** An email an hour after someone abandons a full cart brings some of those orders back.

## How to measure

Pick one metric per change: add-to-cart rate, checkout rate or order rate. Change one thing, wait for enough data and compare with the period before. If a change didn't help, roll it back.

## Why this is daily work

A store is not something you build once. Products change, seasons change and competitors improve. The stores that grow are the ones where someone checks every day where shoppers are dropping off.

That is how we run the stores we build and manage, including [Popopen Canada](https://npcoding.ca/portfolio/popopen-canada/): daily optimization, with a report every morning on what changed. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is CRO?

Conversion rate optimization (CRO) is the work of raising the share of visitors who place an order. Instead of buying more traffic, you improve what happens to the traffic you already have.

### Where should a store start?

At the step where the most shoppers leave. In most stores that is the product page, the cart or the shipping step at checkout. Look at the data, pick one step and improve it.

### How long before results show?

It depends on traffic. A busy store sees a difference within days; a small store needs a few weeks before the numbers are reliable. That is why you change one thing at a time and measure.

### Do we need to rebuild the store to do CRO?

Usually not. Most improvements are small changes to an existing store: copy, images, field order, a clear shipping price. A rebuild is only needed when the platform itself is the limit.
